Apparently the Democrats are not known for their baseball skills.
In fact, the Democratic congressional baseball team is so bad that they have faced seven straight years of losses to the Republicans since their last upset win in 2000. But tonight, at Nationals Park, the team will be suiting up in hopes of their second win of this millennium. Despite their less than stellar track record, tonight just might be the night to make history (in more ways than one).
As the players step onto the field this evening, heads will undoubtedly turn and jaws may drop as the starting Democratic designated hitter steps up to the plate. Why you ask? Because for the first time in congressional baseball history, the first player at bat will be a woman. Due to her impressive line drive at last year’s game, Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) has been chosen as the lucky player to start of this monumental game. In the spirit of the occasion, Sanchez will be wearing Roman numeral IX as her number in homage to Title IX, the law which prohibits sex discrimination in education and athletics.
In my humble opinion, the Republicans have good reason to be concerned. With this type of baseball powerhouse starting off the game, the Democrats are a force to be reckoned with. And for Sanchez, she should have no reason to worry. Title IX’s got her back.
